Unfortunately, the standards of Yoga Teacher Trainings are not strict enough. I know it because I train teachers myself, and I’ve had a lot of freedom to choose what I’m going to teach.
The confusion about what the body can and/or should do is widespread in the world of Yoga.
But this also applies to the way teachers explain what they know: it’s not enough to know how to adapt a posture, the teacher has to know how to share it in a way you can use it!
“I want it all… and I want it now”
This attitude is very typical in us westeners, and it gets us in trouble when it comes to practicing Yoga.
Stretching when you’re stressing over how close your hands are to your feet is not fun, relaxing or effective. It can even become dangerous!
The right teacher helps you find the right balance, so that you don’t go too far, but with enough effort to make progress in your practice. “Bootcamp Yoga” is a recipe for injury.
Let’s be honest… Who likes to wait?
Most people want things to move fast!
Over and over I see Yoga teachers in this “pickle”: because they can’t slow themselves down, they teach you “speed yoga”, which is a real oxymoron.
Breathing slowly and moving slowly prevents injuries, makes you stabilizing muscles stronger (those that prevent pain!), they stretch you more, and they’re the key for deep relaxation.
Many postures don’t belong at all in beginner sequences. Some teachers sometimes forget what it meant to be a beginner!

Yoga without spirituality is not yoga, it’s just exercise. I don’t have anything against exercise, but Yoga has a lot to offer us regardless of our beliefs.
But the problem comes when the teachers try to convey the spiritual message of yoga, confusing spirituality with religion.
Even those who don’t believe in God can be spiritual, because we all can relate to the concepts of joy, freedom, goodness, honesty, etc.
If yoga does not help you to gradually become a kinder, more loving, open, genuine person… you are not practicing right!
One size fits all
Your body is unique. Forcing it to look like any other is a bad idea. But some teachers have a very limited idea of how the posture “should look”, instead of how it should feel. It’s an unfortunate mistake, and I see it commonly: yoga teachers that don’t offer adaptations. What happens if you have an injury on your knee or if you have back pain? What happens if the stretch is too strong for your body? “Bad” Yoga tries to adapt you to the practice. Good Yoga, adapts to you.

What style of Yoga am I going to learn?
The Yoga style I teach is called Akila Yoga. Akila means “Universal” or “Integral.” Its principles make it possible to practice any other style of Yoga that you want, after learning it.

How long will it take to do the postures well?
This is a misleading question. There is no such thing as doing them “well” -there is such a thing as paying attention to them. There is such a thing as doing them in a way that feels good for our body.
That’s exactly what this course is about. From helping you find how to practice to make you feel good and have good results, not to try to look like someone else. Sometimes the postures look very different from what you see in the magazines and they feel great in your body … but the moment you focus on “looking” in some specific way, you forget how the posture should feel.
