Sometimes they call them “steroid shots”. The most common ones are Metilprednisolone, Dexamethasone y Prednisolone, and there are dozens of medications containing these synthetic hormones.

Even though you can get immediate relief with these kinds of shots, they are often times very short lasting. That’s not it… these shots can be dangerous.

Here’s a short list of possible side effects:

  • Risk of Infection.
  • Risk of nerve damage on the site
  • Tachycardia (fast heart beat)
  • Indigestion / Stomach irritation
  • Nausea
  • Insomnia
  • Metallic taste
  • Crystallization of the hormone, which produces more pain

But wait… there is more!

Corticosteroids can weaken tissues in your body, and they can make the healing process take longer.

In a meta study that looked into the medical literature regarding corticosteroid injections,  the results were somewhat alarming: after 6 to 12 months, most of the patients treated with these shots had a recurrence in their injury at the same site.

These injections are not only risky: they can make your healing process take longer.

I can understand that if you have a lot of back pain and the doctor still recommends this option, that you decide to go with this intervention. But you should be well aware of the risks: it is possible you will have the same kind of pain in a few months to a year, and might have made the road to healing harder.

May this lead you to better informed decisions,
